LSESU WAR STUDIES SOCIETY
EVENTS
The War Studies Society organises multiple events per month, featuring international high-profile guest speakers. The Society aims to offer a platform for students to engage with experts in the field, complementing their academic curriculums and providing them with greater insights into the real-world application of their studies. Regular social events are also organized.
Career Table Turn: episode 1
The last event of the War Studies Society during the Autumn Term was our "Career Table Turn".

This event was tailored to provide WSS members with an exclusive opportunity to discover careers in both the private and public sectors by inviting practitioners from NATO, FCDO, JANES, and Sibylline.

WSS would like to sincerely thank Gareth Westwood, Sara Shah, James Tenniswood, and Jasmina O'Shaughnessy for taking part in this event.
New partnership: WSS Blog x Faktoje
The WSS Blog presents a new partnership with Faktoje, a fact-checking non-governmental organization (NGO) established in 2018 that is dedicated to combating the dissemination of disinformation in Eastern Europe.

This partnership aims to:

1. Promote scholarly research and critical analysis of Eastern European topics.
2. Provide mentorship and guidance to students in their writing and research efforts.

3. Facilitate the exchange of articles and ideas between Faktoje and WSS.
Security research workshop: uncovering the impact of deepfakes.
On November 15th, the WSS Blog organized its first workshop of the year, focusing on the impact of deepfakes on international security, especially in the Russo-Ukrainian and China-Taiwan conflicts.
The LSESU War Studies Society would like to thank Maria Beckers for leading this engaging session, sharing her research findings, and guiding us through important security research methodologies.
EU security and crisis response: careers in the EEAS.
WSS had the pleasure of hosting Counselor Massimo Farrugia and Minister Counselor Dr. Andrea Ricci for an insightful discussion on EU crisis response and conflict prevention. The event offered a Q&A session and networking opportunity, allowing attendees to engage with our speakers about their current roles at the European External Action Service (EEAS) and their past experiences in the EU Parliament and Commission.
International organizations in crisis: Palestine, paralysis, and progress.
On October 14th 2024, the LSESU War Studies Society hosted its first public event examining the role of international organizations in addressing the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Palestine. We assembled a distinguished panel of five leading experts in Middle Eastern security, international institutions, and humanitarian emergencies to explore these pressing questions.
The event attracted over 100 attendees for an hour-and-a-half discussion unpacking crucial questions such as the history of UNRWA in Palestine, the role of both the UN Security Council and the UN General Assembly this past year, health interventions amidst the crisis, the conflict’s impact on journalism, and potential political pathways for Palestine's future.
Similarly, questions from the audience were crucial in unpacking the role of key actors such as the United States in shaping the mandates of international organizations in the region, and the potential impact the upcoming US elections could have on the conflict.
WSS wishes to thank Dr. Anne Irfan, Dr. Patrick Gill-tiney, Dr. James Smith, Jayyab Abusafia, and Dr. Tahani Mustafa for their generous contributions to the panel.
